French retailer Casino (CASP.PA) said it would stop using palm oil in its branded food products in a bid to improve their nutritional quality and due to worries about the environment impact of palm tree cultivation.

„This new commitment entails that more than 200 products will be guaranteed to be palm oil-free by the end of the year 2010,“ the company said in a statement on Thursday.

A spokeswoman said that about 570 Casino food products out of more than 3,000 had been identified as containing palm oil and that the group would have it replaced by other vegetable oils like rapeseed or sunflower.

Casino said it had made the decision in an attempt to reduce the amount of saturated fat in its products and because of indications that intensive cultivation of palm trees was done to the detriment of Asian forests.

„This deforestation leads to plant and animal biodiversity losses notably by reducing the living area of some local species,“ Casino said in a statement.

The same policy would apply to company brands in Casino’s other retail divisions, which include Leader Price and Monoprix, the spokeswoman said, declining to comment on the number of products would be changed under the other brands.

Other companies, such as food giants Nestle (NESN.VX) and Unilever (ULVR.L), and French retailer Carrefour (CARR.PA), have said they would try to limit their use of palm oil to certified oil grown in a sustainable way that would avoid any environmental impact.
